What Does Amnesia Fic Mean?
Fic TypeA story in which a character loses their memory, forcing relationships to be rebuilt or revealing feelings that were previously hidden. Memory loss can be played for angst, romance, or both at once.
Amnesia Fic in Practice
Amnesia is a classic trope inherited from soap opera and romance traditions, and fandom has refined it into countless variations: a character forgets only their partner, forgets the last five years, or falls in love with someone all over again without the baggage of their shared history. The trope is powerful because it asks whether love survives when memory does not, and whether a person stripped of their past makes the same choices. The reveal or recovery scene is usually the emotional centerpiece. It pairs frequently with hurt/comfort and established-relationship setups.
Example usage
"This amnesia fic has him courting his own husband from scratch and every chapter hurts in the best way."
