Bodyswap in Practice
Bodyswap is an old speculative premise that fandom uses as an empathy machine: characters literally walk in each other's lives, learning secrets, burdens, and feelings they could never otherwise access. Stories mine it for comedy — impersonating each other badly at work — and for emotional reveals, like discovering the other's hidden injuries, medications, or feelings written in a journal. In ship fic, the trope creates unique intimacy problems and trust negotiations that writers handle with anything from farce to surprising tenderness. The magic or technobabble cause is usually beside the point; the swap is what matters.
