Fanfic Glossary De-Aged

What Does De-Aged Mean?

Fic Type

A trope where a character is transformed into a child — by magic, technology, or accident — usually temporarily, while keeping or losing their adult memories. The rest of the cast must suddenly do childcare.

De-Aged in Practice

De-aging is a beloved engine for forced vulnerability: the team's most guarded member becomes five years old, and everyone learns what they were like — or what was done to them — as a child. The trope splits meaningfully on whether memories survive: an adult mind trapped in a small body plays as comedy and indignity, while a true child version invites the cast to give a damaged character the protection they never originally had, which is where the genre earns its hurt/comfort credentials. It overlaps with kid fic and accidental baby acquisition but is distinct: de-aging transforms an existing character rather than introducing children. The restoration scene, when the adult returns remembering everything, is the traditional gut-punch.

Example usage

"The de-aged fic destroyed me when tiny him flinched and the whole team went quietly feral with protectiveness."
