What Does Deathfic Mean?
Fic TypeA fic centered on a character's death and its emotional fallout — the dying, the grieving, or both. An old genre label promising readers a story built to hurt.
Deathfic in Practice
Deathfic predates AO3's warning system, circulating in mailing-list fandom where headers carried genre labels like 'deathfic, angst, bring tissues.' The genre is deliberate tragedy: deathbed scenes, funerals, survivors learning to continue, sometimes the dead character's absence examined years later. It differs from stories that merely include death — in deathfic, the death is the subject, and readers choose it for catharsis the way they choose grief songs. On AO3 the Major Character Death warning handles disclosure, with tags like 'Grief/Mourning' refining the promise. Its mirror genre is the fix-it, and many fans write both about the same canon loss, sometimes in the same week.
Example usage
"I knew exactly what I was getting into with that deathfic and I still had to stare at the wall afterward."
