What Does Invitation Queue Mean?
AO3 PlatformAO3's account-creation system: rather than open registration, prospective users join a queue and receive an invitation by email when their turn arrives. The wait is usually days, not weeks.
Invitation Queue in Practice
The invitation system dates to the archive's beta origins and survives as load management — metering new accounts protects the volunteer-run infrastructure from signup floods and spam-account waves, both real recurring events when fandom migrations send tens of thousands of users toward the archive at once. The queue's mechanics are simple: request an invite, wait for the automated email, and follow the link before it expires; existing users also periodically receive shareable invitations. Reading requires no account at all — the queue gates posting, commenting with a name, kudos history, and access to archive-locked works, which is why locked-work waves reliably lengthen the queue. For many fans, the invite email's arrival is a minor rite of passage, fandom's version of the acceptance letter.
Example usage
"I joined the invitation queue after my favorite author locked her fics, and the invite came through in two days."
