Lemon in Practice
Lemon is widely traced to anime fandom, where the term — associated with the adult anime series Cream Lemon — became the standard label for explicit fic in 1990s and 2000s communities, anchoring a whole citrus scale: lemons were explicit, limes suggestive, and occasional coinages extended the produce metaphor further. The label did real work in its era, when FanFiction.Net's category system offered less granularity than fandom needed and summary-line warnings ('LEMON in ch. 7!') were the disclosure infrastructure. AO3's rating system and tag culture made the citrus code obsolete, and the word now functions chiefly as generational carbon dating — using it sincerely marks a fan's formative era as surely as an FFN profile link. It survives in nostalgia, in some anime fandom corners, and in fandom-history explainers exactly like this one.
