Explicit (Rating) in Practice
Explicit is the top tier of AO3's five-step rating ladder — General, Teen, Mature, Explicit, plus Not Rated — and it signals depiction rather than implication: the work shows its adult content in detail. The boundary between Mature and Explicit is famously judgment-dependent and authors calibrate differently, which is why ratings work in concert with tags and warnings rather than alone; the rating says how graphic, the tags say what. AO3 interposes an adult-content agreement screen on Explicit and Not Rated works, and logged-in users can set preferences around it. Fandom shorthand absorbs the letter itself: fics are 'rated E,' authors 'write E,' and the E-rated chapter of a slow burn is a known structural landmark.
