Post-Canon in Practice
Post-canon is one of fandom's fundamental timeline positions, alongside pre-canon and mid-canon, and it's where fandom processes endings: beloved finales get extended, disappointing ones get repaired, and ambiguous ones get adjudicated. The genre carries distinctive moods — epilogue-style domestic peace, melancholy about characters scattered by time, or the practical question of who these people are once the plot stops happening to them. Endings that fandoms found unsatisfying generate enormous post-canon output, overlapping with fix-it fic. When new canon later contradicts years of post-canon fic, those works get retroactively reclassified as canon divergence, a rite of passage older fandoms know well.
