Fanfic Glossary Songfic

What Does Songfic Mean?

Fic Type

A fic structured around a song, traditionally with lyrics interleaved between passages of prose. A defining genre of early internet fandom that survives today mostly in evolved forms.

Songfic in Practice

The classic songfic alternated story paragraphs with italicized lyric stanzas, letting the song run beneath the scene like a soundtrack — a form so popular in the FanFiction.Net era that it became one of fandom's nostalgic signatures. It declined for two reasons: changing taste, as the lyric-interruption format came to feel dated, and policy, since reproducing copyrighted lyrics violated site rules including FFN's own. The impulse never died, though; it evolved into fics titled after songs, works built on a song's narrative without quoting it, chapter epigraphs, and the now-standard practice of attaching playlists to fics. Spotting a true lyrics-interleaved songfic in the wild today is like finding a fossil — usually beloved, always era-marked.

Example usage

"It's a 2003-style songfic where the chorus interrupts the breakup scene four times, and honestly? Nostalgia won."
