Fanfic Glossary Trollfic

What Does Trollfic Mean?

Fic Type

A fic written to be deliberately, provocatively terrible — bad spelling, absurd plotting, and escalating outrage as performance art. The reader's bafflement is the intended product.

Trollfic in Practice

The trollfic weaponizes badness on purpose, and its masterpieces are genuinely famous: 'My Immortal,' the legendarily awful Harry Potter fic, is fandom's most celebrated specimen — quoted, dramatically read, adapted, and debated for years over whether its badness could possibly be sincere. That ambiguity is the genre's engine; a great trollfic sustains the question 'is this real?' across chapters, and the authorship and intent of the classics remain genuinely disputed. Trollfic differs from crackfic in posture — crack is absurdity shared with the audience, trollfic is absurdity aimed at them — though the line blurs constantly. The genre also created its own appreciation culture: dramatic readings, sporkings performed with love, and the firm consensus that writing convincingly terrible prose on purpose is weirdly difficult.

Example usage

"Every few years someone new discovers 'My Immortal,' and the fandom gathers to watch them experience the trollfic canon event."
