Fanfic Glossary UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension)

What Does UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) Mean?

Shipping Culture

Charged attraction between characters that the story sustains without consummating — every loaded glance and interrupted almost-kiss, maintained indefinitely. An acronym from 1990s fandom that remains standard.

UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) in Practice

UST was coined in the X-Files fandom era to name that show's defining engine — two partners orbiting each other through years of charged proximity — and the acronym became permanent fandom vocabulary for the phenomenon anywhere it appears. As a tag, UST promises tension as the product: the fic may resolve it (fandom occasionally jokes about RST, resolved sexual tension, as the sequel state) or may end with the wire still humming. The craft of UST is sustained denial that doesn't curdle into frustration, which is why it pairs so closely with slow burn pacing and pining interiority; the distinction is emphasis — slow burn describes a whole arc's speed, while UST names the electrical condition itself. Decades on, it remains one of the few acronyms understood instantly across every generation of fandom.

Example usage

"Six seasons of UST and the show never once let them finish a sentence standing that close together."
