Fanfic Glossary Villainess

What Does Villainess Mean?

Fic Type

A genre of isekai and reincarnation stories in which the protagonist becomes the doomed villainess of a romance plot — usually an otome game or novel — and must dodge her scripted bad ending. A massive genre in Japanese and Korean web fiction with a thriving fandom presence.

Villainess in Practice

The villainess premise inverts the standard romance: the heroine wakes up as the haughty noble rival fated for exile or execution, armed with knowledge of the plot, and sets about derailing it — often accidentally charming the entire cast in the process. The genre boomed through titles like My Next Life as a Villainess and countless manhwa, and its conventions (engagement annulments, crown prince love interests, capture targets) are now fluent fandom vocabulary. Fic writers love the structure because it is already fic-shaped: a self-aware character renegotiating a fixed narrative is canon-divergence as a premise. Villainess AUs of other fandoms are a natural and popular crossover form.

Example usage

"It's a villainess AU, so she's read the script, refuses the duke, and the plot armor is fighting for its life."
