What Does Character Study Mean?
Fic TypeA fic whose primary purpose is exploring a character's interior life — their psychology, history, contradictions, and quiet moments — rather than driving a plot. Often introspective, often short, often gorgeous.
Character Study in Practice
Character studies are fandom's literary fiction: low on event, high on insight, built from close attention to how a character thinks and why. The form attracts some of fandom's strongest prose stylists, and the tag signals to readers that the payoff will be understanding rather than resolution — a fic might cover one evening of a character making dinner and reveal more about them than canon ever did. Studies of villains, minor characters, and figures canon neglected are especially prized, since fic can grant interiority the source never bothered with. The tag often travels with 'introspection' and POV-specific labels.
Example usage
"It is a 3k character study of the villain making tea the night before the battle, and it rewired my brain."
