What Does Gen Mean?
Fic TypeFic without a romantic or sexual focus — stories centered on friendship, family, adventure, or character work. One of AO3's relationship categories, alongside F/M, M/M, F/F, Multi, and Other.
Gen in Practice
Gen descends from 'general audiences' in zine-era labeling, where it distinguished non-adult, non-ship material, and it survives as both an AO3 category checkbox and a cultural identity: gen fandom is the substantial population reading and writing for found family, team dynamics, casefic, and character studies rather than romance. The boundary is fuzzier than the checkbox implies — canon couples may exist in the background of a gen fic, and fandom periodically debates how much ship content the label tolerates before it stops being gen. The gen side of fandom sometimes describes feeling crowded by shipping's dominance, and dedicated gen exchanges and fests exist partly as habitat preservation. Some of every fandom's most acclaimed works are gen, a fact gen readers will cheerfully cite.
Example usage
"It is a gen heist fic, all team banter and competence, and it is better than half the published thrillers I read this year."
Related Terms
Found Family
The trope of unrelated characters becoming family in every way that matters — chosen bonds replacing or repairing the ones biology and canon failed to provide. One of fandom's most cherished emotional registers.

Casefic
A fic structured around a case or mission of the kind the canon characters professionally handle — a murder to solve, a monster to hunt, a heist to run. Essentially an original episode in prose form.
Definition →
BroTP
A portmanteau of 'bro' and 'OTP': a fan's favorite platonic relationship. Where an OTP is the pairing you ship romantically, a BroTP is the friendship you cherish exactly as friends.
Definition →
Character Study
A fic whose primary purpose is exploring a character's interior life — their psychology, history, contradictions, and quiet moments — rather than driving a plot. Often introspective, often short, often gorgeous.
Definition →
Het
Fanworks centered on a male/female romantic or sexual pairing — the M/F category in AO3's taxonomy. One of fandom's oldest classification terms, short for heterosexual.
