Fanfic Glossary Coda

What Does Coda Mean?

Fic Type

A short fic that picks up immediately after a specific episode or scene, showing the aftermath canon skipped — the conversation in the car home, the patching of wounds, the quiet processing. Borrowed from the musical term for a concluding passage.

Coda in Practice

Coda fic is episodic fandom's reflex: an episode ends on an emotional beat and cuts to credits, and within hours fandom writes the next twenty minutes. Codas are usually canon compliant by nature, slotting into the gap before the following episode, and they cluster most thickly after installments heavy on injury, revelation, or unresolved tension — exactly the moments canon loves to leave dangling. The form is nearly synonymous with episode tags, though some fans use coda for the more introspective register and tag for any episode-appended scene. Whole communities once organized around posting codas weekly through a show's airing run.

Example usage

"I need a coda for last night's episode where someone actually acknowledges what he said in the elevator."
