Fanfic Glossary Episode Tag

What Does Episode Tag Mean?

Fic Type

A short fic appended to a specific episode, continuing or reacting to its events — the scene after the credits rolled. Functionally synonymous with a coda.

Episode Tag in Practice

The episode tag is episodic-TV fandom's basic unit of response, named for tagging a scene onto the broadcast hour. Tags flourished in procedural and genre-show fandoms where episodes ended with emotional business conspicuously unfinished — the injury never mentioned again, the confession interrupted — and writers supplied the missing aftermath within days, often titling works directly after the episode. The form is inherently canon compliant and time-stamped; reading a fandom's episode tags in order reconstructs how it experienced a season, week by week, which gives old tag collections a documentary charm. Coda and missing scene are its close kin, differing mainly in where the inserted scene sits.

Example usage

"Within six hours of the episode airing there were forty episode tags fixing that hallway scene."
