What Does Creature Fic Mean?
Fic TypeFic in which a character is, or becomes, a supernatural creature — vampire, werewolf, veela, siren, dragon. Especially associated with Harry Potter fandom's 'creature inheritance' tradition, but present everywhere.
Creature Fic in Practice
Creature fic transforms a character's nature, not just their circumstances, and the genre splits along that line: stories about becoming (the horror and adjustment of turning) and stories about being (creature societies, mate bonds, hidden natures revealed). Harry Potter fandom industrialized the form with creature-inheritance fics, where characters come into veela or other heritage on a birthday, often with destined-mate mechanics that overlap heavily with soulmate AU and Omegaverse logic. In other fandoms, vampire AUs and werewolf AUs carry the tradition. The genre's pull is the monstrous as metaphor — desire, otherness, and the question of whether the changed self is still the self.
Example usage
"Yes, it is a creature fic with a wing-reveal scene, and yes, the wing grooming is a love language."
