Fanfic Glossary AU (Alternate Universe)

What Does AU (Alternate Universe) Mean?

Abbreviation

Short for Alternate Universe: a story that deliberately changes fundamental facts of the canon setting — the time period, the world's rules, or the characters' circumstances. Coffee shop AUs, no-powers AUs, and modern AUs are classic examples.

AU (Alternate Universe) in Practice

AU is one of fandom's broadest and oldest labels, covering everything from a single changed premise ('what if she never left town') to total transplants where only the characters' personalities survive. The genre's central bet is that beloved characters remain themselves anywhere, and watching familiar dynamics replay in a new context is its own pleasure. Fandom has developed a rich taxonomy of stock AUs — coffee shop, college, soulmate, royalty, flower shop — each with its own conventions and in-jokes. Canon divergence is technically a subtype, though many fans reserve AU for bigger departures and tag small ones separately. Some AUs become so popular within a fandom that they effectively develop their own fanon.

Example usage

"It is a 200k fantasy AU and I now know these versions of the characters better than canon."
