Fanfic Glossary Darkfic / dark!Character

What Does Darkfic / dark!Character Mean?

Fic Type

Fic that deliberately explores disturbing territory — cruelty, tragedy, moral corruption — without softening it. The dark! prefix (as in dark!Harry) marks a character written as a sinister version of themselves.

Darkfic / dark!Character in Practice

Darkfic is the genre label for stories that walk into the shadows on purpose: villain-wins scenarios, trauma examined without comfort, heroes corrupted, endings that do not redeem. It relies completely on fandom's warning infrastructure — archive warnings, dense tags, dead dove conventions — because its readership is strictly opt-in. The exclamation-point modifier is the genre's signature notation: dark!Character announces an alternate characterization, and the same convention extends across fandom vocabulary (evil!, soft!, BAMF!) as a compact way to flag any altered take. Defenders of darkfic note that exploring terrible things in fiction is one of fiction's oldest jobs; the tags exist so nobody reads it by accident.

Example usage

"Heed the tags — it is a dark!mentor fic and the author does not flinch once in forty thousand words."
