Fanfic Glossary Whump

What Does Whump Mean?

Content Term

Fic content centered on a character suffering — injury, illness, captivity, exhaustion — rendered in loving detail, usually with comfort somewhere on the horizon. The suffering is the genre, and it has a devoted community.

Whump in Practice

Whump names the appetite that hurt/comfort only half-admits: the hurt itself, lingered over — the collapse, the fever, the rescue arriving almost too late. The term arose in fandom decades ago (onomatopoeia for the sound of a hero hitting the floor) and matured into a full subculture with its own vocabulary: the whumpee suffers, the whumper inflicts, the caretaker tends, and entire blogs and prompt calendars serve the niche. The community is notably self-aware and cheerful about its preferences, which range from gentle sickfic territory to dark captivity arcs, all governed by fandom's standard tagging ethics. Psychologically, fans describe whump as catharsis with guardrails — controlled doses of suffering where the reader holds the dosage and comfort is contractually available.

Example usage

"Her blog is pure whump: today's prompt fill features hypothermia, a stubborn refusal to rest, and one very alarmed caretaker."
