Downloads (AO3) in Practice
Offline downloads are a deliberate piece of AO3's preservation philosophy: fans should be able to keep the works they love, on their own devices, in open formats that work on e-readers. Readers use downloads for flights, commutes, and the time-honored practice of archiving favorites against the day an author orphans or deletes them — a real enough occurrence that 'download your favorites' is standing fandom advice. The feature interacts with author deletion in a way fandom broadly accepts: a deleted fic survives only in the copies readers saved. Downloads also feed the fanbinding hobby, supplying clean files that binders typeset into printed volumes.
