Fanbinding fuses bookbinding craft with fandom's gift economy: binders typeset fics with chapter headers and custom title pages, print and fold signatures, sew text blocks, and case them in designed covers, producing one-of-a-kind volumes of stories that exist nowhere in print. The hobby grew sharply in recent years, helped by tutorial communities and AO3's clean download files, and it operates under firm community ethics — bind for personal use or as gifts to the author, never for sale, since selling fanfic crosses legal and cultural lines fandom polices itself. Authors generally treat receiving a bound copy of their own fic as among the highest honors fandom can pay.
