Fanfic Glossary Enemies to Lovers

What Does Enemies to Lovers Mean?

Fic Type

The trope where antagonism transforms into romance — rivals, opponents, or genuine enemies whose hostility turns out to be combustible. One of fiction's oldest engines, and modern fandom's signature obsession.

Enemies to Lovers in Practice

Enemies to lovers predates fandom by centuries — Beatrice and Benedick were doing it in 1599 — but fan culture canonized the phrase itself as a top-tier tag and built a connoisseurship around its gradations, from professional rivals to sworn nemeses, with endless debate over what intensity of enmity 'counts.' The trope's power is conversion energy: passion already exists as hostility and only needs its sign flipped, and the beats fandom treasures — the reluctant alliance, the blade at the throat that becomes something else, the 'oh no' realization mid-argument — all exploit that stored charge. It dominates ship-culture taste polls, fuels both canon ships and villain/hero fanon pairings, and pairs naturally with slow burn for maximum voltage.

Example usage

"My taste is simple: enemies to lovers, 100k, and at least one sword fight that is obviously not about the sword."
