Fanfic Glossary Fake Dating

What Does Fake Dating Mean?

Fic Type

The trope where characters pretend to be a couple — for a wedding, a cover story, a jealous ex — and the performance becomes real. Also known as fake/pretend relationship, its canonical AO3 tag.

Fake Dating in Practice

Fake dating is one of romance's great delivery mechanisms because the premise launders intimacy through obligation: the hand-holding, the practiced kisses, the rehearsed anecdotes are all required by the ruse, letting repressed characters do couple things while insisting none of it counts. The genre's beats are lovingly standardized — establishing the rules, the too-convincing public performance, the moment alone when neither lets go — and the collapse of the pretense is the payoff the whole structure exists for. Fandom stacks it gleefully with adjacent tropes: fake married for the mission, fake dating plus only one bed, fake engagement for the inheritance. The trope's eternal tagline, 'oh no, the feelings were real,' barely counts as a spoiler.

Example usage

"Fake dating for a family wedding, and by the third practiced forehead kiss neither of them remembers it is fake."
