What Does Forced Proximity Mean?
Fic TypeThe trope that traps characters together — snowed-in cabins, stuck elevators, shared safehouses, long undercover assignments — until closeness does its work. Romance by confinement.
Forced Proximity in Practice
Forced proximity is the structural trope underneath half of romance's favorite scenarios: only one bed, huddling for warmth, fake dating's shared apartment, the quarantine fic, the road trip. The mechanism is honest about its purpose — characters who would never voluntarily lower their guards are deprived of exits, and intimacy becomes a physics problem with one solution. Fandom prizes the trope for what it does to repressed and hostile pairings especially, which is why it stacks so naturally with enemies to lovers: the snowstorm does not care about the rivalry. The canonical tag lets readers filter straight to the confinement of their choice, and writers treat the scenario menu — cave-in, blizzard, stakeout, locked room — as a beloved standard repertoire, the romance genre's equivalent of blues progressions.
Example usage
"Blizzard, dead radio, one cabin, two idiots who hate each other: forced proximity delivering exactly as designed."
