Fanfic Glossary Genderbend

What Does Genderbend Mean?

Fic Type

Fanwork reimagining a character as a different gender — long called genderbend or genderswap, with 'Rule 63' as the meme-law version. Newer usage often prefers terms like cisswap or gender-changed AU.

Genderbend in Practice

Genderbending is an old transformative tradition spanning fic and art: female versions of male casts and vice versa, used for everything from lighthearted redesigns to serious explorations of how gender rewires a character's canon story — how differently the same ambition, arrogance, or anger gets read. Internet fandom codified the impulse as Rule 63 ('for every character, there exists an opposite-gender version'), and AU tags proliferated accordingly. The terminology itself has evolved under trans-aware critique: 'genderswap' assumes a tidy binary switch, so fandom increasingly distinguishes cis-swap AUs from trans headcanons and nonbinary reimaginings, each tagged on its own terms. The genre's best works treat gender as load-bearing rather than cosmetic, which is exactly what makes them interesting.

Example usage

"The genderbend AU rewrites the whole succession plot, because a daughter making the same power grab reads completely differently at court."
