What Does Human AU Mean?
Fic TypeAn alternate universe in which non-human characters — robots, gods, aliens, monsters, sentient ships — are reimagined as ordinary humans. The supernatural canon traded for mortal stakes.
Human AU in Practice
The human AU performs a specific translation: it asks what remains of a character when their defining inhumanity is removed — the android's otherness becomes neurodivergence or alienation, the immortal's weariness becomes age, the demon's hunger becomes something a therapist would have notes about. In fandoms built around non-human casts, the human AU is a major standing genre, and its critics and devotees argue a real aesthetic question: whether humanizing characters distills their essence or deletes the entire point. The form overlaps with modern AUs since most human AUs land in the contemporary world, and it frequently powers the standard cozy templates — the eldritch entity now runs a bookshop. Done seriously, the genre doubles as an essay on which traits were ever really about the species.
Example usage
"The human AU turns the ship's AI into the building's night-shift security guard, and somehow she is exactly the same character."
