The love triangle is one of commercial fiction's most reliable structures, and fandom's relationship to it is productively adversarial: canon triangles split fandoms into shipping camps whose rivalries define eras, while fic gets to do everything canon cannot — resolve the triangle early, choose the other corner, interrogate why the choice was framed as binary at all, or famously dissolve it into polyamory, fandom's classic 'why not both' answer (the OT3 solution). Fic also builds original triangles, including the genre's structural masterpiece, the identity-porn triangle where two corners are secretly the same person. Triangle discourse — accusations of corner-bashing, endgame warfare, retrospective defenses of the losing option — is a permanent fandom genre, and tags disclose triangle outcomes precisely because readers have strong corner loyalties.
