What Does OT3 (and OT4, OTn) Mean?
Shipping CultureA favorite pairing of three characters — 'one true threesome,' riffing on OTP. Larger configurations extend the pattern: OT4, OT5, and beyond.
OT3 (and OT4, OTn) in Practice
OT3 takes the OTP formula and adds a chair to the table: instead of choosing between two rival pairings, some fans conclude the real answer is all three characters together. The term covers both romantic triads and, in looser usage, an inseparable trio a fan loves as a unit. Love-triangle canons generate OT3s almost automatically, since 'why not both' resolves the triangle without losers. The numbered pattern scales up for ensemble casts — an OT4 of bandmates, an OT5 of a whole team — shading into general polyship territory. AO3's Multi category and explicit three-person relationship tags make these ships findable.
Example usage
"The love triangle discourse raged for years until half the fandom just adopted the OT3 and found peace."
