Not Rated in Practice
AO3's rating scale runs General, Teen, Mature, Explicit — and then there's Not Rated, for authors who can't or won't pick. The archive errs on the side of caution: logged-out readers see the same proceed-with-care interstitial they'd get on an Explicit work, since a Not Rated fic could contain anything. Authors choose it for varied reasons — a work that defies the scale, an import with no original rating, or a deliberate shrug. Readers tend to treat it as a wildcard and rely on tags and warnings to judge what they're walking into.
