Fanfic Glossary OTP (One True Pairing)

What Does OTP (One True Pairing) Mean?

Shipping Culture

A fan's ultimate favorite ship — the pairing they're most emotionally invested in. The term is one of fandom's most widely recognized acronyms, used far beyond fic circles.

OTP (One True Pairing) in Practice

OTP dates back to early-2000s online fandom and has proven durable enough to escape into mainstream internet slang. The 'one true' part was originally semi-literal — your OTP was the ship, singular — but usage relaxed long ago, and most fans cheerfully maintain an OTP per fandom plus a fleet of secondary ships, while multishippers reject the exclusivity entirely. Declaring an OTP communicates intensity: this is the pairing whose tag you subscribe to, whose 300k slow burns you reread annually. The acronym also spawned an extended family — NOTP, BroTP, OT3 — that maps the whole landscape of fannish attachment.

Example usage

"Eleven years, three new fandoms, and they're still my OTP — some ships are just load-bearing."
