Fanfic Glossary Peggy Sue

What Does Peggy Sue Mean?

Fic Type

A fic in which a character travels back into their younger self with adult memories intact and relives canon, usually fixing it. Named for the 1986 film Peggy Sue Got Married.

Peggy Sue in Practice

The Peggy Sue is fanfiction's most systematic do-over: the protagonist wakes in their own past — often at canon's beginning, often after a bad ending — keeping every memory, and proceeds to dodge disasters, save the doomed, and short-circuit misunderstandings years ahead of schedule. The term took root in fanfiction communities (forum fandoms like Harry Potter's use it heavily) for what AO3 culture often tags as time-travel fix-it, and the two labels substantially overlap, with Peggy Sue specifying rebirth into one's own younger body. The genre's pleasures are competence and dramatic irony — a child character with a veteran's mind unsettling everyone around them — and its standing challenge is keeping tension alive when the hero knows the script. Done well, the butterfly effect supplies the answer.

Example usage

"Classic Peggy Sue: she wakes up on the first day of school with twenty years of war memories and a to-do list."
