What Does Podfic Mean?
Fic TypeAn audio recording of a fanfic read aloud — fandom's homegrown audiobook tradition. Podficcers record, edit, and post performances of fics, usually with the original author's blessing.
Podfic in Practice
Podfic is a full transformative art form, not just narration: podficcers make interpretive choices about voice, pacing, and emotion, and elaborate productions add music, sound effects, or multiple voice actors. The community has its own infrastructure — blanket permission statements authors post to pre-approve recordings, anthology events, and length-based challenges — and its own etiquette, with asking permission (or checking for a blanket statement) as the cardinal rule. AO3 hosts podfic as works in their own right, linked to the source fic via the 'inspired by' function. For many fans, podfic is how they read: during commutes, chores, and everything in between.
