Fanfic Glossary R&R (Read and Review)

What Does R&R (Read and Review) Mean?

Abbreviation

An author's request that readers leave a review after reading. A signature phrase of the FanFiction.Net era, usually appearing as 'Please R&R!' in summaries and author's notes.

R&R (Read and Review) in Practice

On FanFiction.Net, reviews were the only feedback mechanism — no kudos, no likes — so authors campaigned for them, and 'R&R' became the universal shorthand of summary boxes and chapter-end notes throughout the 2000s. The plea ranged from cheerful to openly bargaining, including the now-frowned-upon practice of holding chapters hostage until a review count was hit. The phrase reads as charmingly retro today: AO3's kudos button created a low-effort feedback layer, and modern etiquette discourages demanding comments. Spotting 'R&R' in the wild usually means you're reading something old, imported, or written by someone who's been around a while.

Example usage

"The author's note ends with 'Hope you liked it! Please R&R!' — a true 2006 time capsule."
