What Does BNF (Big Name Fan) Mean?
AbbreviationA fan who has become famous within their fandom — for popular fics, art, meta, or sheer visibility. BNF status is conferred by the community, never claimed, and the label is often slightly barbed.
BNF (Big Name Fan) in Practice
The term predates the internet, going back to science fiction zine fandom, and it has always carried a mix of admiration and side-eye. A BNF's recommendation can make an obscure fic explode, their ships dominate a fandom's output, and their feuds become public spectacles whether they want that or not. The ambivalence is structural: fandom prizes its flat, gift-economy ethos, so visible status hierarchies make people itchy, and calling someone a BNF can be a compliment, a neutral observation, or an accusation of throwing their weight around. Most accused BNFs deny being one, which is itself a running joke.
Example usage
"The ship exploded overnight after a BNF posted a 60k fic and the entire fandom read it in one weekend."
