Fanfic Glossary Reader Insert

What Does Reader Insert Mean?

Fic Type

Fic written so the reader is the protagonist, typically in second person ('you') with Y/N standing in for your name. The character of 'Reader' even gets their own AO3 relationship tags.

Reader Insert in Practice

Reader-insert fic makes the fantasy direct: instead of watching characters fall in love, you are the love interest, addressed as 'you' throughout, with placeholders like Y/N (your name) and occasionally Y/L/N (your last name) for customization. The form has deep roots in anime fandom and Quizilla-era sites and exploded on Tumblr and Wattpad, especially in K-pop, Marvel, and band fandoms; AO3 formalized it with canonical tags like 'Character/Reader.' Craft debates within the genre are lively — how much to specify the reader's appearance, whether gender-neutral phrasing should be default — and the best reader-inserts manage characterization of a protagonist who is deliberately half-blank.

Example usage

"Her Character/Reader fics are so good that even people who swear they hate second person keep coming back."
