What Does POV (Point of View) Mean?
AbbreviationThe perspective a story is told from — which character's head the reader occupies. Fic headers and tags routinely specify POV because it shapes the entire reading experience.
POV (Point of View) in Practice
Fandom is unusually POV-conscious for a writing culture: tags like 'Character A POV' are standard because, for a story readers may know by heart, whose eyes you see it through is the story. Common configurations include tight third person limited (the fandom default), first person, alternating POVs across chapters, and the second-person 'you' of reader-insert fic. POV experiments are a recognized fic art form — retelling canon events from the villain's perspective, or the celebrated outsider POV genre that views heroes through a stranger's eyes. The same acronym also thrives in meme formats ('POV: you're the last cookie'), which is unrelated but shares the vocabulary.
Example usage
"The whole fic retells the trial from the defense attorney's POV, and it recontextualizes everything."
