Fanfic Glossary Recursive Fanfiction

What Does Recursive Fanfiction Mean?

Fic Type

Fanfiction of fanfiction: a work based on another fan's fic rather than (or in addition to) the original canon. The fic-of-the-fic treats someone's AU or original elements as its source material.

Recursive Fanfiction in Practice

When a fanfic becomes influential enough, it generates its own fandom — readers write sequels, side stories, and AUs of the fic, drawing on its original characters, worldbuilding, and version of events. The famous fics of large fandoms often have whole recursive ecosystems, complete with their own tags. Etiquette mirrors fandom's broader norms scaled down one level: most authors are honored, many post blanket permission for derivative work, and AO3's 'inspired by' link formally connects the chain. Remixes and podfic are institutionalized cousins of the same impulse. Recursive fic is also fandom's neatest self-justification: it proves transformation is how stories naturally propagate.

Example usage

"The coffee shop AU got so big it has its own recursive fics now, including an AU of the AU."
