RPF is far older than the internet — fans have written about celebrities for as long as celebrity has existed — and modern fandom hosts enormous RPF communities around bands, K-pop groups, sports teams, and online creators. The genre's central convention is that it fictionalizes a persona, not a person: writers work from public images while inventing freely, and community etiquette enforces a strict fourth wall — never show fic to its subjects, never harass real people over fictional events. AO3 hosts RPF openly, a deliberate founding-era policy choice after other platforms banned it, though authors often restrict such works to logged-in users. Debates about its ethics are perennial and unresolved, which hasn't slowed its output in the slightest.
