What Does Tinhatting Mean?
Shipping CultureBelieving — earnestly, against denials and evidence — that a real-person ship is secretly together, and that signs of the hidden relationship are everywhere. Named for the tinfoil hat of conspiracy thinking.
Tinhatting in Practice
Tinhatting is where RPF shipping crosses from fiction into conspiracy: rather than enjoying a pairing as imaginative play, tinhatters maintain that the relationship is real and concealed, reading outfits, social media timing, and body language as coded evidence, and explaining away contradictions — public partners become 'beards,' denials become proof of the cover-up. The phenomenon recurs across band, actor, and idol fandoms, and its harms are concrete: harassment of subjects' real partners, elaborate surveillance-style analysis of private lives, and community schisms when reality intrudes. Mainstream RPF fandom works hard to distinguish itself from tinhatting — the fourth-wall ethic of 'we know it's fiction' exists precisely to mark that line. The term is pejorative everywhere, including within RPF spaces.
Example usage
"The shippers write fic and mind the fourth wall; the tinhatters have a forty-slide presentation about jacket colors."
