Fanfic Glossary Self-Ship

What Does Self-Ship Mean?

Shipping Culture

Shipping yourself with a fictional character — and the community practice built around it, complete with art, fic, and proudly claimed 'F/O' (fictional other) relationships.

Self-Ship in Practice

Self-shipping turns the private daydream into open fandom practice: self-shippers commission art of themselves with their fictional other, write fic, celebrate anniversaries, and maintain blogs dedicated to the relationship. The community, concentrated on Tumblr, developed its own vocabulary — F/O for the character, 'self-ship positivity' as a community ethos — and its own etiquette, including the soft norm of not judging anyone's F/O and using 'don't tag as kin' style boundaries. The culture's core achievement is destigmatization: what older fandom hid behind disguised OCs, self-ship culture does in the open, treating comfort and joy as sufficient justification. It overlaps with but is distinct from reader-insert fic, which is written for an audience.

Example usage

"Her blog header is commissioned art of her and her F/O at the beach, and the self-ship community showed up with congratulations."
