Fanfic Glossary Shounen-ai

What Does Shounen-ai Mean?

Content Term

A dated label that Western anime fandom once used for male/male romance stories without explicit content, as opposed to yaoi for explicit work. The Japanese phrase literally means 'boy love.'

Shounen-ai in Practice

In Japan, shounen-ai originally named a 1970s shoujo manga genre of romantic stories between boys, but the term fell out of favor there and carries uncomfortable connotations in modern Japanese usage. Western fandom of the 1990s and 2000s repurposed it as a content rating: shounen-ai meant sweet and non-explicit, yaoi meant adult. That split has largely collapsed as BL (Boys' Love) became the standard umbrella term in both Japanese and international fandom. You will still see shounen-ai on older fic archives and in legacy tagging, so it is worth recognizing, but most current fans simply say BL and indicate the rating separately.

Example usage

"The old archive sorted everything into 'yaoi' and 'shounen-ai' sections, which tells you exactly how long it's been online."
