Fanfic Glossary Yaoi

What Does Yaoi Mean?

Content Term

A term from Japanese fandom for male/male romantic and sexual content created largely by and for women — adopted by Western anime fandom in the 1990s-2000s as its word for M/M fanworks. Largely supplanted in English by 'BL' and 'slash.'

Yaoi in Practice

Yaoi originated in Japan's dōjinshi (fan comic) culture as a self-deprecating acronym joking that such works were all climax and no plot, and it became the export label under which Japanese M/M fan culture reached the West during the anime boom — Western anime fandom used 'yaoi' broadly for explicit M/M content, with 'shounen-ai' as the era's term for the romantic, non-explicit side. The terminology has since shifted: 'BL' (boys' love) is now the standard umbrella in both Japanese commercial publishing and most international fandom, while English-speaking fandom's own word, slash, covers the same territory with a separate lineage. 'Yaoi' in current usage carries a distinct 2000s-era flavor — invoked nostalgically or ironically, complete with memories of seme/uke charts and convention paddles — though it remains a live genre term in some communities.

Example usage

"Her fandom origin story is the mid-2000s yaoi section of the local bookstore, and she tells it with pride."
