The sickfic thrives on a simple, endlessly renewable premise: illness lowers a character's defenses and obligates closeness, letting stoic characters be vulnerable and undemonstrative ones show care through soup, blankets, and staying. The genre has well-loved standard scenes — hiding the illness until collapse, the fever-blurred confession that may or may not be remembered, the caretaker getting sick next chapter — and ranges in tone from cozy domestic fluff to genuinely heavy chronic illness stories. It overlaps with whump on the suffering side and pure fluff on the caretaking side, with most sickfic living comfortably in between. For comfort-reading purposes, it is one of fandom's most reliable genres.
