Fanfic Glossary Top / Bottom

What Does Top / Bottom Mean?

Shipping Culture

Terms describing partners' roles in a sexual pairing — the top as the more active or penetrative partner, the bottom as the receptive one. In fandom, also the subject of famously intense shipping discourse.

Top / Bottom in Practice

The terms come from LGBTQ+ community usage, and fandom employs them both descriptively in tags — letting readers filter for their preferred configuration — and, more notoriously, as the fuel for 'top/bottom discourse,' the recurring argument over which half of a popular ship occupies which role. Critics of that discourse note it often imports rigid heteronormative role-mapping onto same-gender pairings and flattens characterization into archetype, a critique that parallels the older seme/uke debate inherited from BL fandom; 'switch' and a general 'it doesn't matter' position are common responses. As tagging practice, though, the vocabulary is simply informational — like most fandom terms, it works best as a label and worst as a battlefield.

Example usage

"The ship's tag is peaceful these days, but veterans remember when top/bottom discourse split it down the middle."
