Fanfic Glossary Seme / Uke

What Does Seme / Uke Mean?

Shipping Culture

Terms from Japanese boys' love (BL) fandom for the partners in a male/male pairing: the seme is the pursuing or dominant partner, the uke the pursued or receptive one. Western fandom borrowed both, then increasingly questioned them.

Seme / Uke in Practice

The words derive from Japanese martial arts vocabulary — the one who attacks and the one who receives — and became fundamental grammar in BL and yaoi fandom, where pairing order in a ship name traditionally encodes who is which. Classic BL art styles even visually coded the roles, with taller, darker seme and softer-featured uke designs. Western fandom absorbed the framework during the anime boom, but it has since drawn sustained criticism for flattening characters into rigid roles and importing heteronormative assumptions into same-gender pairings. Contemporary fandom uses the terms with more irony and flexibility — 'seke' for switchable dynamics, and a lot of affectionate parody of the old archetypes.

Example usage

"Old-school BL fandom would assign seme and uke within minutes of a new ship; modern fandom mostly jokes about having done that."
