What Does TPTB Mean?
AbbreviationThe Powers That Be — fandom shorthand for the showrunners, studios, and executives who control a canon. Used since the Usenet and mailing-list era, usually with an eye-roll built in.
TPTB in Practice
TPTB compresses fandom's relationship to canon's controllers into four letters: the unseen authorities who cancel shows, sink ships, and joss theories from on high. The term flourished in 1990s television fandom and carries a distinctive tone — half mock-reverence, half grievance — that distinguishes it from neutrally naming a writer or network. It survives most strongly among fans of that vintage and in fandoms with adversarial creator relationships, where TPTB function as the antagonist of the fandom's own ongoing story. The phrase itself was popularized in part by its in-universe use on shows of the era, a loop fandom found very funny.
Example usage
"TPTB confirmed the spinoff today, so the fandom is celebrating and bracing for betrayal simultaneously."
