Fanfic Glossary Vanilla

What Does Vanilla Mean?

Content Term

Describes conventional, non-kinky sexual content — or by extension, anything standard and unadorned. Borrowed from broader usage, applied in fandom as a neutral content descriptor.

Vanilla in Practice

In content discussions, vanilla marks the baseline: an explicit fic with no kink elements is vanilla, and the word lets readers and writers calibrate expectations the same way ratings and other tags do. Fandom inherited the term from wider community usage, where it distinguishes conventional sexuality from kink, and mostly uses it neutrally — though tone wobbles by context, since 'vanilla' can be a simple descriptor, a gentle self-deprecation, or occasionally a dismissive jab that etiquette-minded fans push back on, kink-tolerance norms cutting both directions. The word also escapes the adult context entirely: fans describe trope-free fic, default characterizations, or unadventurous takes as vanilla. As with most content vocabulary, its real function is honest labeling.

Example usage

"The fic is rated E but thoroughly vanilla — tagged accordingly, so everyone knows what they're getting."
