Fanfic Glossary Squick

What Does Squick Mean?

Fandom Culture

Content that triggers personal disgust or discomfort — visceral, individual, and explicitly not a moral judgment. 'That's my squick' means 'not for me,' not 'this shouldn't exist.'

Squick in Practice

Squick is one of fandom's most quietly important coinages, emerging from 1990s fan communities precisely to separate 'this repulses me personally' from 'this is wrong': your squick is your own nervous system's veto, and the term's whole function is to let fans flag boundaries without indicting anyone else's tastes. The companion principle — your kink is not my kink, and that's okay — turns the vocabulary into a peace treaty: authors tag potentially squicky content, readers steer around their squicks, and nobody needs to win an argument. The word works as noun and verb ('blood squicks me'), and it remains the load-bearing distinction beneath all of fandom's content-curation etiquette.

Example usage

"Embedded-in-modern-AU canon character cameos are my weirdly specific squick, so I just back-button and wish the fic well."
