Fanfic Glossary Vent Fic

What Does Vent Fic Mean?

Fic Type

Fic written primarily to process the author's own emotions — grief, anger, anxiety — channeled through characters. Authors often label it as venting to set expectations about polish and content.

Vent Fic in Practice

Vent fic makes explicit what is quietly true of much fanfiction: writing through a character is a way of handling what's happening to you. The label, common in author's notes and tags ('vent fic, sorry'), signals several things at once — the content may be heavy, the editing light, and the emotional core personal — and fic communities generally meet it with gentleness rather than critique. The practice overlaps with hurt/comfort and projection onto comfort characters, where a beloved character endures or survives what the author is enduring. Comment etiquette on vent fic skews toward care for the writer, and 'I hope you're okay' is its characteristic response. Some authors later orphan or lock their vent work; others find it becomes their most resonant writing.

Example usage

"The notes just say 'vent fic, mind the tags,' and the comments are equal parts praise and gentle concern."
